I · The Hall of Mirrors
The covered mirror
Every mirror in the house is draped in black. One veil is loose at the corner.
Evidence found: a letter behind the veil
“We stop the clocks and cover the mirrors. The vault keeps the day we chose to remember: month, then day. Four numerals, I to IV.”
Need a hint?
Lift the veil.
II · The Parlour
The faded photograph
A family portrait, so faded the faces are gone. Someone wrote on the back in lemon juice.
Evidence found: writing on the back
“I · As much as is left of their faces: nothing.”
Need a hint?
Hold it to the lamp until the writing appears. How much is left of the faces?
III · The Chapel
The chapel bell
The bell tolls once for every person the family lost that winter.
Evidence found: the tolls
“II · Count the tolls.”
Need a hint?
Sound on, or watch the bell. Count how many times it rings.
IV · The Altar
The memorial candles
Three candles for three generations. The family always lit them eldest first.
Evidence found: a note under the candlesticks
“III · The number of candles still burning when the family left: zero.”
Need a hint?
Eldest, then middle, then youngest.
V · The Study
The stopped clock
The clock stopped at the wrong hour. A card beside it: 'Set it back to when we last sat down for supper, at six.'
· · · · · ·
Evidence found: a whisper from the clock
“IV · Six o'clock. The fourth numeral is the hour.”
Need a hint?
Turn the hands to six.
VI · The Guestbook
The guestbook
Visitors sign in memory of one person. The lock on the book wants his first name.
Evidence found: the key between the pages
“Signed: Toiletticus. A small key slips out from between the pages.”
Need a hint?
His full name is Toiletticus Paperson. The lock wants the first part.
